From Big Data to Actionable Data Analytics

Are you trying to make sense of all the data you are receiving globally and trying to understand what to do with it and how to use it? Specifically the data that comes from your enterprise use of technology which includes nowadays mobile phones, M2M, SaaS, GPS, VPN access, landlines and so much more. It is great to have access to all of this data, but it is not so great to actually know what to do with it and make sure you can reap the benefits from all that stored data. Evolving business IT usage  means constant changes in how departments interact with each other. As seen previously, Chief Information Officers (CIOs ) are adopting (or at least exploring) BYOD, cloud computing and Big Data (among other trends) to meet business needs.   However, when thinking about technology, we have the misconception that the CIO is the only person responsible for managing it all. That used to be true, but not anymore... The times are changing According to a recent Gartner survey, CIOs are finding that they have to improve communication with other leaders in their organizations because IT itself is becoming increasingly necessary to business strategies. In the survey, the top 3 reasons for CIOs to seek stronger relationships with other business units were: To gain a clearer understanding of business strategies and priorities (21%); To identify initiatives and projects to focus on (19%); To build more collaborative relationships with business executives (17%);

Big data is found in just about all places, and pretty soon it very much will be. In fact, we wrote about some of the bigger feats in big data – a program that combines information from 20,000 sources, the Human Genome Project, and easy parking in LA – it’s all impressive (especially easy parking in LA)! The thing to notice about big data is that, on its own, big data achieves nothing. It needs to be paired with action. Which brings us to today’s topic: Actionable data analytics.

What is Big Data? IBM defines “big data” as the culmination of data that is generated all around us from multiple sources. This data is continuously generated from everything in our surroundings. Because of the sheer volume of data, the only way to turn it all into useful information is through the deployment of emerging technologies that require vast amounts of processing power and integration software. Once enough data has been collected (even from what some would think to be unrelated events), trends emerge which offer big data analysts insights with great amounts of detail.

Montreal. February. 8 pm. During the throes of a major blizzard… All of a sudden, you’re on your way to having a bad ending to your day. You hear the strident sound of a snow plow. Panic-stricken, you realize you forgot to move your car prior to the city’s snow removal operations. Now you have no other choice but to slip on your boots and run back out into the harsh cold. The best case scenario has you digging your car out of the thick snowy shroud created by the snow plow. The worst case scenario has you running around, trying to find your towed car, and paying a hefty fine for your trouble.

Sony absolutely smashes records for data storage Oh, how I do love the march of progress! Sony just unveiled something unbelievable at the International Magnetics Conference in Dresden: A tape that can hold 185 TERABYTES of information in one itty-bitty cassette form factor. That means that you could jam three Blu-ray discs’ worth of data into a single square inch of this tape. Here are some other fun comparisons – one 185 terabyte tape would hold the equivalent of:
