Multicultural. Vibrant. Innovative.
These are three words that many people use to describe Montreal. And our city has earned all of these descriptors. I’m going to focus on the fact that Montreal is home to many technological advancements (this is a business technology blog, after all). In keeping with the march of progress, Montreal is now offering its citizens the opportunity to become more productive in more places around town!
Work smarter underground - literally
Have you ever wondered how much time you would save if you could access your emails while sitting in your 30-minute subway ride before arriving to the office? You could sort your priorities and identify emergencies as they come in so that you’d be ready to take action as soon as you step foot in the office. Now that’s efficiency!
Well, wonder no more! It’s possible to do so in Montreal since November (well, at least in part). La Société
de transport de Montréal (STM) is now offering its riders the 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) technologies between the green line’s subway stations Guy Concordia and Saint-Laurent.
By 2021, 68 stations should have internet access, and it’s only going to cost $50million to fully build this network. This makes Montreal one of the few cities in the world to have an underground transit system that supports the 4G LTE network. No more excuses to not be on top of your tasks every morning! This connectivity enables mobile phone owners to browse the Internet, make calls, and watch videos (and anything else you can do on a mobile device). The STM’s next plans are to extend the network to more subway stations (including high-traffic hubs Beaudry station, Berri-UQAM station, and Atwater station on the green line, and Mont-Royal station and Namur station on the orange line) later this year. That’s not the end, though!
Get educated about wearables!
Montreal is also keeping up with the wearables trends. As you’ve seen in a previous blog post, wearable technology is on the rise. While wearables can be very useful for work purposes, it also brings a fair amount of cost and complexity (and security issues – luckily, since you can secure BYOD, you should also be able to secure wearables as well. We’ll touch on this as time goes on). In order to make the best use of this innovation, education is key.
And so, if you’re a developer, engineer, entrepreneur, designer, or inventor targeting this trend, there’s work to do! Luckily, WearHacks is there for you! WearHacks is “an international non-profit organization headquartered in Montreal, focused on the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship in Wearable Technology and Internet of Things all over the world”.
The purpose of this organization is to connect innovators with industry experts in order to create a wearable technology community that supports the creation of tools and resources to encourage creativity in the wearables space.
WearHacks also organizes Hackathons – 48-hour intensive sessions in Montreal where tech-minded professionals get together to build new wearable and connected technology! You don’t live in Montreal? Don’t worry! WearHacks will soon be hosting other Hackathons in cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Berlin and Zurich, so stay tuned!
As the BYOD trend rises, so rise mobile apps!
It’s no surprise for any of us that the number of mobile phones subscribers is increasing at a massive rate. Canadians LOVE their mobile devices! This means than more than ever your firm will need to have mobile-friendly offerings, and that you might want to consider the development of a mobile app. Why an app? Because apps can help you increase your visibility, encourage repeat purchases, and build relationships with your customers.
But, developing the perfect app for your business can be challenging. It also takes a lot of time (if you’re going to do it right). This is why companies like Underlabs were created: to help you create custom apps based on your offerings that you can then sell (or give away, depending on your business model). Underlabs is another hidden Montreal gem that creates iOS and Android apps, Native Desktop applications, and Web-Based applications on demand.
Basically, by embracing technology, you can help your clients work smarter! For that matter, as long as you’re keeping up with new tech trends (like Montreal has done), you’ve created the context to work smarter yourself!
How can Cimpl help you navigate this new era of tech?
Montreal is also the home of Cimpl, Canada’s leader in IT and telecom expense management! The surge of mobile devices, wearables, and apps is impacting businesses in many positive ways. But all this also brings cost management challenges and concerns about BYOD. That’s why we’re here! Cimpl will help you secure BYOD and work smarter overall! Furthermore, we like to keep you updated on all the latest trends happening in technology – follow us to keep up to date!
