Game Night Just got a Little More Interesting!

*Please note that Etelesolv changed its company name to Cimpl in 2016.

Technology is constantly evolving and the level of connectivity enabled by mobile applications is becoming more all-permeating each and every day. The ability to bring individuals to places they’ve never been or show them sights they’ve never imagined seeing is one such technological capacity whose increasing reach continues to impress. A powerful example would be how technology has changed the way we watch hockey.

On the hockey season’s opening night last week, 55,000 hockey fans tuned in via livestream (via one single platform); a cumulative total of 1.9 million minutes of hockey gameplay was watched this way. Three quarters of the viewers watched this stream in more traditional format – from their homes. Meanwhile, the remaining quarter streamed the game using their tablets and mobile phones. The average amount of time that was viewed per fan totaled 51 minutes. That’s a huge block of time given how quickly people tune out of other programming.

Image_HockeyBlogPostWith livestreaming, game night can take place anywhere - it’s also given the power over replays to viewers as well! Of the 1.9 million minutes viewed, over 80,000 minutes were spent watching replays from multiple angles. Instant replays are only one bit of heightened functionality, however.

Viewers can now get unprecedented access to the rink. Fans can now see the game from numerous perspectives. They can see the action from the  referee’s point of view, witness the game from behind the players’ bench, and can even virtually hover over the net to catch those crucial shots at goal. These incredible viewpoints bring fans closer to the game than ever before and allow for a more dynamic and interesting viewing experience.

Now, as fantastic as all of this may be, there are certainly still kinks in the system. Fortunately, user feedback is taken into serious consideration for  developing further improvements and modifications for livestreaming programming. At any rate, viewers have access to all manner of features that were impossible just a scant few years ago, and can also see 50% more games than before.

Of course, there’s a cost to bear for bringing less fettered access to the masses. The most direct resource cost comes in the form of data usage. Now, this varies varies quite a bit per device. But it is always appreciable. For mobile devices, it takes about 1GB / game while for tablets, gaming consoles, TVs and computers, data usage falls between 2-5GB / game. It is also important to note that many features that are available for desktops and laptops are not available for mobiles and smartphones. Lastly some of the features are only available in certain arenas. This means that not all viewing experiences will be the same and that some will games will lack features that others have.

Having said all this, there really is no denying that technology has and continues to greatly enhance our ability to access all the information that exists around us. As mentioned above this new application lets hockey fans see their favorite sport from a whole new set perspectives.

Here at Etelsolv, we too have been looking for ways to view the technology industry in a new light.
