Do you have used devices hidden in your office?
Do you have drawers full of old wireless devices? Boxes of used phones or smartphones hiding in closets around the office? Don’t think so? Go, have a look, then come back and read the rest of this article. Oh! Don’t forget to bring the boxes of old devices back with you... the ones that you will most probably find in obscure places around your office building. Oh, again, don’t wear your best clothes to do this task – you’ll most likely to end up with a trip to the dry-cleaners!
Now that you’ve started to collect these dirty, dusty, old devices, what will you do with them? Are you sure none of them are active? Really? 100% sure? If you have never thought of using your TEM software to log old equipment, here is what you will need to do:
- Take each device
- Separate them by provider
- Open up the back
- Log the serial number on an excel spreadsheet
Once you’ve gone through all the old stuff and gotten the information, send it off to each provider to ask if any of these serial numbers are still active or not. I bet you there will be 5 out of every 100 devices that are still active. Just for fun, ask your provider how long there has been no usage on that active line. Then use this little equation:
## of months of inactivity X monthly cost = wasted $$
And a better one using all the active lines you’ve found:
(# of months of inactivity X monthly cost) X # of “live” devices found = wasted $$$$
Now, if you had known this, you would have used your TEM software’s warehousing feature to log the devices as they come back from users. This way, you check right away if they are live or not and cancel them as needed (of course!), log the serial number in the TEM software and put the device in its box. Once you are ready to recycle the old equipment, all you need to do is look up the warehouse in your TEM software, extract the data and a neat little spreadsheet is created.
