Cimpl at a JS-Montreal event: A meeting of the minds
We came bearing gifts
Representing us at the meeting (held in the Montreal offices of Radialpoint) were Luis Custodio (R&D Developer), Sherwin Alexander (Team Lead of R&D), and Maria-Julia Guimaraes (Graphic Designer). Sponsorship of the event was straightforward: The sponsor only had to furnish beer and pizza. Of course, being generous souls, we also brought along mugs and pens to give out to attendees. Luis, Sherwin, and Julia showed up with a lot of swag on hand.
With 60+ people in the crowd, attendance was much higher than expected. According to Luis, a veteran of JS-Montreal meets, that night’s crowd was actually more than double the usual size. While we brought enough food and beer (phew!), there weren’t nearly enough mugs to go around – these had to be given out in random draws to lucky recipients, who were (understandably) quite delighted with their prize!
Of course, this really wasn’t Cimpl’s key contribution to the meeting. Anyone can give away food and prizes, after all. No, our main event was in the form of Sherwin’s presentation. Sherwin, having worked for Cimpl for nearly a decade (and by extension, in technology management), was in a prime position to tell the wonderful story of our company to the gathered programmers.
A brief history of Cimpl
Sherwin began by speaking about the humble beginnings of Cimp, originally named Etelesolv. About how it all started with just one man and a singularly brilliant idea. Of course, Sherwin was referring to Christopher Thierry, the founder and president of the company. Sherwin explained that Christopher had the visionary insight to see the promise inherent in using software to track and to automatically manage all of the sprawling IT assets that could overwhelm a firm. Sherwin detailed just how ahead of the times this single idea had been.
Sherwin then recapped the remaining history of Cimpl – about the company’s early years, and of its explosive growth from 22 to over 60 employees between 2011 and 2013. He noted that the recent surge in employees necessitated the company’s move last month to new headquarters three times the size of our original offices. About how we’re looking to hire more employees still, so that we may expand and improve Cimpl, which is simply the best asset management software in Canada.
Technology expense management and passionate, positive people
In the end, the most important takeaway that the crowd gleaned from Sherwin’s presentation was the concept of technology expense management (TEM) itself. As it turned out, the majority of those in attendance had never even heard of TEM, despite being cutting-edge technology professionals! Ultimately, Sherwin wasn’t just an ambassador for our company, he was an ambassador for TEM as a whole!
Overall, the night was a rousing success. It was full of passionate, positive people with common goals – basically, our kind of crowd. If you were in attendance, we were glad to have met and spoken with you. We sincerely got as much out of the experience as you did.
