Tablet, Phone or Phablet?

A follow-up to the Smartphone VS Superphone

With all of the Cell phones, Smartphones, Superphones and tablets out there, why not have a Phablet? We have a new Telecom word – and it`s called Phablet.

Can you guess what it is? Phone+Tablet = Phablet

What exactly is a Phablet?

According to Wikipedia: a Phablet is smartphone class featuring screen sizes from 5.0 to 6.9 inches,[3] designed to combine or straddle the functionalities of a smartphone and tablet — and avoid the need to carry two devices it`s a combination of a smartphone and a tablet. Believe it or not, the Phablet actually came out in 1993! The first of its kind was the AT&T EO440.

How practical is a phablet? Yes, you could save on devices / number of services assigned to one person, but honestly, how practical is it to speak on your Phablet – ever try holding one to your ear? They are quite a bit larger than the Smartphone (or Superphone), and some us women don’t have hands that big. On another practicality-view, if you have one phablet, and are on the phone (assuming your phone is to your ear), how would you take notes on it? The phablets usually come with a stylus pen, which is awesomely practical, but totally unuseful if you’ve got the phone stuck to your ear.

Historically, smaller was better. Small mobile phones were discrete and fit in your pocket. Then came the way of the PDA/Smartphone/Superphone – smallish, yes but with more capabilities than the “regular” mobiles. Pocket-sized no longer matters it seems. These days, the Telecom industry seems to be going the way of the fast food restaurants – supersizing everything – which is not exactly a bad idea given the added combined functionalities the phablets have. The thinness of these devices has not gone by the wayside, but it’s the screen that has gotten bigger.

On the corporate-side, do you know how many people in your Enterprise have 2 devices that could be reduced using a phablet? Just think of the costs you could save! Using Cimpl, you could easily pull out all of your users with 2 devices, replace them with one device, AND see how much you’ve saved on monthly fees!

Has one of you used a phablet yet? If so, I’d like to read your comments on them. Is it practical? How is the phone reception?
