In the 1800s, a Scottish Engineer by the name of John McAdam recognized that the roads were littered with holes, muddied and flooded, often leaving then impassable. One day he decided to put down rock and gravel to stabilize the roads. This created an unforeseen chain of events as soon afterwards people leveraged more dependable access to areas and began extending their reach by creating offshoots from the main arteries of transportation. The result was trade grew and people got richer.
